Manila, Philippines – August 2025
The legal counsel for Police Senior Master Sgt. Joey Natanauan Encarnacion has denied allegations that his client is connected to gaming tycoon Atong Ang in the case of the missing sabungeros (cockfighting aficionados).
The defense lawyer, Atty. Bernard Vitriolo, clarified that Encarnacion does not know Atong Ang personally and only recognizes him as a popular figure, rejecting the claims made by whistleblower Julie Patidongan.

According to Patidongan, Encarnacion was among the 12 police officers allegedly working for Atong Ang, who was accused of masterminding the kidnapping and killings of sabungeros between April 2021 and January 2022. The Philippine National Police (PNP) later placed these officers under restrictive custody.
Encarnacion’s Legal Defense and Lack of Connection to Atong Ang
In a press conference, Atty. Vitriolo stated that Encarnacion was unaware of any personal dealings with Atong Ang. The police officer was reportedly attending the National Forensic Science Training Institute in Cavite during the alleged time of the kidnappings.
The Fishery Allegation and Official Certifications
Vitriolo also addressed another claim that Encarnacion owned a fishery in Taal Lake, where the bodies of the missing sabungeros were allegedly dumped.
The defense lawyer presented certifications from the municipalities of Laurel and Talisay in Batangas and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources confirming that Encarnacion had no such ownership.
Ang’s Denial and Legal Proceedings
Meanwhile, Atong Ang has denied all accusations against him, calling the claims “entirely false” and accusing Patidongan of attempting to extort P300 million from him in exchange for not implicating him in the case.
Encarnacion, along with the other officers, faces administrative charges filed by the National Police Commission in July 2022. The PNP has been under scrutiny as the case continues to unfold.
Conclusion
As the case of the missing sabungeros continues, the legal proceedings and investigations will play a crucial role in uncovering the truth behind the allegations. The police officers’ defense and their potential involvement in the kidnappings remain at the forefront of the legal battle, with both the authorities and the defense asserting their positions.
