MANILA, Philippines – Calvin Abueva played a key role in helping NorthPort end one of the longest losing streaks in the PBA Philippine Cup with a big 113-108 win over NLEX on Wednesday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Though NorthPort was already out of playoff contention, Abueva’s energy helped push the team to a dominant performance. Cade Flores delivered a career-high 26 points and 15 rebounds, earning him the Best Player of the Game award. However, Flores credited Abueva for raising the overall energy of the team.

Abueva’s Impact on the Game
Cade Flores praised Abueva for his leadership and said, “Having somebody that has that same energy [as me] when it comes to practice, it really helps lift our spirits and the energy of the team.”
Abueva contributed 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals in just his second game for NorthPort since being traded from Magnolia for William Navarro. His hard work and enthusiasm on the court were felt by all his teammates, who were motivated to push their limits.
Coaching Perspective on Abueva’s Role
Assistant coach Rensy Bajar spoke highly of Abueva’s professionalism, even though he joined the team late. Bajar mentioned that Abueva‘s positive attitude and competitive nature in practice were a major boost for NorthPort.
“He was a late addition to our team, but he’s still very professional,” Bajar said. “He practices well and encourages other players like Cade Flores. Their competition in practice is next-level.”
Looking Ahead: NorthPort’s Final Game
With the victory over NLEX, NorthPort hopes to carry Abueva’s momentum into their final Philippine Cup game against San Miguel Beer on Sunday at Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo.
Conclusion
Calvin Abueva’s energy and leadership were the keys to NorthPort’s win against NLEX, and it’s clear that his presence is helping the team stay motivated, even when they are no longer in playoff contention. With his continued contribution, NorthPort hopes to finish the season strong in their final game.
