GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines – A couple killed in a fire in General Santos has left the community in mourning.
The incident occurred near the Barangay Dadiangas South public market, where Saeb Sapal, 50, died while trying to save his wife, their three-year-old daughter, and three other children from neighboring families trapped inside the building.

The Tragic Death of Saeb Sapal
Saeb Sapal tried to rescue his loved ones when the fire broke out, but he became trapped while helping others escape the flames. Saeb’s wife, who was severely burned, was rushed to the hospital but later passed away on August 17, 2025, due to third-degree burns.
Cause of the Fire
The fire likely started while Saeb Sapal was preparing food for their eatery. Barangay Councilman Thaddeus Catapang explained that the fire spread quickly because the materials in the eatery were light, which made it easy for the flames to reach the ceiling.
Heroic Actions and Recognition
Despite the tragedy, Saeb Sapal is being hailed as a hero for his selflessness. The Barangay Dadiangas South has declared him a hero for his courage in trying to save others, including his family and the children trapped in the building.
Community Response and Ongoing Investigation
The fire also impacted neighboring vegetable stalls and cooking ingredient carts. The barangay has promised to support the three families affected by the fire. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, which may have been caused by cooking oil that ignited during Saeb’s preparations.
Conclusion
This tragic event has shaken the local community, highlighting the bravery of Saeb Sapal. His actions will forever be remembered as a symbol of selflessness and courage in the face of danger.
